Most of the equipment currently in the hospital was purchased in the late 1980's when the hospital was being built. Several pieces of equipment needed to be replaced and new equipment purchased to continue the quality of patient care services offered by Stanton Territorial Hospital. During the past three years, the Foundation has purchased over $2.5 million worth of equipment for the hospital including a new CT Scan, two Ultrasound units and a new Mammography Machine. ACHIEVEMENT OF GOAL - BONE DENSITOMETER!! The Stanton Territorial Hospital Foundation coordinates fundraising activities throughout the year to augment the equipment and services available at Stanton. This year, the Foundation targeted a campaign for a vital piece of equipment: a bone densitometer. A bone densitometer, on which the patient lies during a bone density test, resembles a large padded examination table. The densitometer measures bone density by using a small amount of radiation. The test is painless and takes less than ten minutes. Bone density testing can be used to establish or confirm a diagnosis of osteoporosis and predict future fracture risk. It is the only sure way to determine bone density. Prior to the purchase of this densitometer, northern patients had to travel south for bone density testing. Now, the test can be done in the North, and strategies can be started immediately to prevent osteoporosis if bone density testing determines bone loss in occurring. Although osteoporosis is generaly considered to be a woman's health issue, men may also be at risk.
